Chocolate Project (2023-24)

After two successful years of doing the Chocolate Project with 6th graders, I had the opportunity to do the project with adult ESL students at American One English Schools in West Valley City, Utah. Overall, I found that the project worked well with both age groups. Like in previous years, I had my students read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, compete to see who could come up with the best idea for a new chocolate bar, and then take the winning student to the Aggie Chocolate Factory to pour the winning chocolate. This year’s winner was Gricelda Arzaluz, a student from Mexico City, whose idea was Gracy Bite (dark chocolate + pistachios).

On February 1st at 10am (just like in the book!), Gricelda and a classmate visited the Aggie Chocolate Factory and had a fantastic time learning more about chocolate and pouring the winning bar. Several reporters were on-hand to cover the story. Here is a sampling of the media coverage we received:

Utah State TODAY: “No Golden Ticket Necessary: USU’s Aggie Chocolate Factory Hosts Wonka-Like Experience” by Taylor Emerson

KSL TV: “West Valley student wins competition, gets to design chocolate bar” by Mike Anderson

The Salt Lake Tribune: “Utah’s newest Willy Wonka turns childhood memory into chocolate bar at Aggie Chocolate Factory” by Jacob Scholl
